Military Appreciation Days

May 1 - 31, 2013 – Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach will host Military Appreciation Days during May 2013.  This month-long celebration is sponsored by the City of Myrtle Beach and PGBA, LLC, as a “thank you” to our dedicated service men and women – and their families – for all that they do on our behalf.  The celebration includes active duty military personnel, reserves, National Guard and veterans from all service branches.

During May, military personnel and their families can look for discounts to area restaurants and attractions, free concerts, the big Memorial Day weekend parade, a 5K run and other special events.  For Military Appreciation Days, the city also will host a delegation of 25 Wounded Warriors from our nation’s recent conflicts.

Now in its fifth year, Military Appreciation Days is this community’s way of showing its gratitude and support to the men and women of the nation’s military services.   Our thanks are evident during the big Ocean Boulevard parade and picnic, Saturday, May 25.  The parade, with Grand Marshal Rocky Bleier, Army veteran and former Pittsburgh Steelers' running back, begins at 10:30 a.m., then afterwards join us for lunch prepared by the Omar Shriners Chefs.  The picnic is free for all military, veterans and their families.

Headlining the afternoon is the Andrew Thielen Big Band with an outstanding patriotic show.  Also featured are military exhibits, two Vietnam-era helicopters from NBC's hit show, Revolution, kids’ activities and more, including the Veterans Beard and 'Stache Beach Bash.

MRE sampling is just one of the activities Saturday during the Family Picnic.  MREs, or Meals-Ready-to-Eat, are the modern-day version of C-Rations.  SOPAKCO, a Mullins company, makes MREs for the armed forces and is donating some for you to try.  Come taste what our military personnel eat when they’re deployed!

The Grand Strand Patriotic Alliance will recognize Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, with 11:00 a.m. ceremonies on the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Plaza.  The public is cordially invited to attend this and all other events, as we say "thank you" to our military men and women and their families for their service and sacrifice.

Also Monday, veterans and active-duty military are invited to be guests of honor at the second annual Myrtle Beach Memorial Day Tribute at Grand 14 Cinemas at The Market Common.  It includes recognition of veterans and active duty military, a performance of patriotic music, a color guard presentation and screening of the documentary film Swamp Fox: Francis Marion and the American Revolution

Admission to the Myrtle Beach Memorial Day Tribute is free, with complimentary popcorn and soft drinks courtesy of Grand 14 Cinemas.  Seating in the theater is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is sponsored by the City of Myrtle Beach, the Center for Military & Veterans Studies at Coastal Carolina University, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, Goldfinch Funeral Home and Grand 14 Cinemas.
